Aperture
How much of ourselves do we share with others? Do we reveal our imperfections with honesty and vulnerability, or present a softened, idealized version - slightly out of focus, guarded, and carefully composed?
Aperture uses the lens as a metaphor for the way we perceive ourselves and each other. Obscuring, sharpening, exposing, concealing, zooming in or out, and playing with scale and detail in a way that compels a second look. Under the microscope, I photographed unseen textures and structures of denim, silk organza, knits, and power mesh. In contrast, I explored the opposite side of the lens - from afar, unclear, and ambiguous. I shot unfocused photographs to blur, and put subjects in motion. Aperture turns textiles inside out, manipulates scale, and amplifies detail, taking inspiration from the duality of perception and truth.
